Pianist Ellis Marsalis' crisp but understated style on "Let It Snow" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" evokes the great Basie's own fingerwork; Johnny Mathis brings a playful spirit to his vocal turn on "It's the Holiday Season"; and Ledisi opts for a warm tone and delicate vibrato on "The Christmas Song." The whole band sounds potent, balancing brassy exuberance with relaxed, season’s-greetings swing.
